Happy Thursday! Every week, we ask our therapists a question and post their responses for you to read. This week tackles a question we have a lot of people ask; Do I have to get completely undressed for massage therapy? Danny P: No. You can dress/undress to your own comfort level. Understanding that clothing (bras, t-shirts, ect) make the use of strokes difficult and can leave the therapist no alternative technique other than compressions, severely limiting the effectiveness. But as a therapist, we want our clients to be at their most comfortable, and this includes their choice as to how undressed they wished to be. Matthew S: In order to work effectively, it is best to wear as limited articles of clothing as possible, so that the strokes I use such as on the back and shoulders are smooth and uninterrupted. If a client would like glute work, I usually recommend removing undergarments as well, as it would allow me to work on the glutes more effectively. The draping techniques I use keep the body fully covered and the only areas ever exposed are the ones that Im working on, but my main goal is to make sure that the client is comfortable no matter what. Stay warm and relaxed today :-)
