Happy birthday Bernard Rinn Senior, love you and miss you. In honor of your birthday, and your anniversary, I am playing and old fuzzy version of Perry Como in 1973 singing and I love you so, on Sesame Street. Its perfect. I am also reposting your tribute. xxoo You always heard him before you saw him, if he wasn’t singing, as he did so well, he was whistling. The song that stands out in my memory is Perry Como’s “And I Love You So.” He was a ballad man. I never saw him angry or grumpy or down. I never heard him swear, not once. He held no value whatsoever in possessions, only in people. He collected people who loved him wherever he went, like coins spilling out of a treasure chest. My love of sports began with him. On sunny summer Sundays when everyone else was in the pool, I would squish into the chair in the master bedroom with him and we would watch the Red Sox games on a small black and white TV with enough aluminum foil on the antenna to contact aliens. I had many questions as I learned the game. We lamented Williams retirement. We agreed that his replacement in 67 was going to be something special. I was sure of that simply because he batted from the other side of the plate like Williams, like me. I remember basketball games in the driveway, he was a great shot. He had this unusual jump shot, his legs were never bent. It was smooth and it was lethal. He and his beloved wife raised five great kids with patience and love. The house on Brendard Avenue was wonderful, chaotic and always a cyclone of activity, laughter and guests. He left his legacy in those five wonderful people he brought into the world who, in turn, due to DNA and example, raised wonderful families of their own. His faith was unwavering. He never missed church. He never missed the opportunity to give his time or effort. He so loved being a Knight. But he was weary. His beloved wife of 60 years had moved on to heaven in 2011 and left a gaping hole in his existence that could not be filled. His youngest child and only daughter had departed without warning last summer. That heartbreak alone should have killed him. He missed them terribly and yearned to join them. When I told Domenic that he was ready to leave, he said “Ah, heaven is waiting to regain one of its shining stars.” So I will take that thought and run with it. If you look up into a clear sky in the night, you will find a grouping of three beautiful stars. That’s him there in the middle, shining, glittering, dancing, between his wife and his daughter. If you listen carefully, you can hear his song on the breeze.
