Happy birthday John William Strutt the physicist and mathematician that discovered argon (Ar) in 1895, which earned him the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physics. His colleague in this research, Sir William Ramsay, won the same years Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Best known as Lord Rayleigh the Third Baron of Terling Place, he studied under George Gabriel Stokes, was a distant relative of Robert Boyle, and his students included J.J and G.P. Thomson - the father&son that discovered the electron and that it was a particle, JJ (Nobel in Physics 1906), and simultaniously a wave, G.P. (Nobel in Physics 1937) Lord Rayleigh succeeded James Clerk Maxwell as Cavendish Professor of Physics at Cambridge in 1879 but returned after 5 years to his mansion doing what he liked most: unhindered research in his private laboratory on the family estate.
