Happy birthday to a Tar Heel great, center Brad Daugherty (86), who celebrates his 49th birthday today. Brad was a four-year starter at Carolina from 1982 to 1986 and was one of the greatest big men ever to don the Tar Heel jersey. Brad is currently in the top ten all-time in scoring with 1,912 career points, averaged 7.5 rebounds per game in his career, with nearly 10 in his junior and senior seasons and shot 62% from the field to go with a 14.2 ppg career average. Brad entered Carolina following the 1982 National Championship at the age of 16 after playing for CD Owen High School just outside of Asheville. Upon graduation, Brad was the #1 overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the second ever Tar Heel to be drafted with the top pick (James Worthy - 1982), and spent his entire nine-year career there, where he scored over 10,000 points, averaged 19.0 ppg and 9.5 rpg. His #42 Carolina jersey hangs in the rafters for being Consensus All-American 2nd team in 1986 and his #43 Cleveland jersey is retired by the Cavs. Today, Brad is owner of JTG-Daugherty Racing, which has a majority of his drivers racing in the Nationwide Circuit. This past season, his team grabbed its first Sprint Cup Series win when driver AJ Allmendinger won at Watkins Glen, and that win advanced his team to the Chase for the Cup for the first time ever. That car is now eliminated from contention. Just announced a few days ago, Brad will head back to ESPN to do basketball games in college and NBA, and will be calling games on the Sunday Night ACC package.
