Harlin C. Kearsley desk: African American History Is American History November 7 AAHIAH: EPISODE #2 [PART II] - THE ORIGIN OF JIM CROW youtu.be/SSWWZ_ycFE0 Here is another video sample of the new radio program I created entitled African American History Is AMERICAN History (AAHIAH). I am currently seeking a proper venue (and funding) to continue this eclectic half-hour long series, which includes old-time radio style storytelling of historical events and bios of unsung heroes, guest interviews on both historical AND contemporary topics, music and commentary. Because of this, the program will appeal to a wide range of listeners of every race from 16-96... And would make a perfect addition to any American History classroom or library. The overall goal of African American History Is AMERICAN History is to foster understanding, promote discussion and expand knowledge for ALL races in an entertaining yet thought provoking way. The radio series ties in with the Facebook page of the same name. Currently, African American History Is AMERICAN History has well over 2800 members...and growing. My hope is, that like the Facebook page, the AAHIAH radio program can become a forum where open and honest discussions about race in America can take place. Throughout many of the episodes on African American History Is AMERICAN History, comparisons will be made between the many racially fractured periods of American history...and whats going on right now. Slavery was abolished one hundred and fifty years ago; Jim Crow, only fifty years ago. Yet Stop & Frisk; Voter ID; Stand Your Ground; Income Inequality; the rash of police shootings and a host of other current problems are proof that their detrimental effects continue to be felt...And that the struggle for equal rights for ALL must continue. Currently, six (6) episodes have been completed: EPISODE #1 (the pilot) Is a dramatic profile on Viola Liuzzo, who at only 39, was the only White female Civil Rights worker to be murdered in the struggle for equal rights for all. youtu.be/_55UuJ2K39c(PLEASE NOTE: This radio pilot is for non-commercial demonstration use. Portions of the music used within is representational and no copyright infringement is intended.) EPISODE #2 Is a profile on a forgotten trailblazer, Samuel J. Battle, and his rise from New York Citys first Black police officer in 1910; the first Black sergeant in 1926; the first Black lieutenant, in 1935; to the city’s first Black parole commissioner, in 1941. (youtu.be/zXwMN3Bi5v8) EPISODE #2 [PART II] The second half of this program focuses on the origin of Jim Crow and a listing of some of the many segregation laws throughout the South. youtu.be/SSWWZ_ycFE0 EPISODE #3 Focuses discrimination in both the North and South, and the effect Jim Crow had on day to day living from both the Black AND White perspective. youtu.be/uT165HA8dik EPISODE #4 Is an in studio interview with Certified Life Coach, Small Business & Technology Coach, and Inspirational Speaker Crystal Williamson. We discuss her work with aspiring African American entrepreneurs, helping them set their own path and achieve their goals. EPISODE #5 and #6 Is a two part episode on slavery in America. Both episodes contain segments from the 2001 National Public Radio (NPR) special I wrote and directed called VOICES: THOSE WHO WORE THE SHOE. That program went on to be nominated for a Peabody Award. AAHIAH is perfect for schools and libraries, as this series can both entertain and educate. This is much more than the usual Black History Moment type of program. The focus is not on the usual historical African American figures such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass (we all know about them...And if you dont, you need to sue your 6th grade History teacher), its more of a focus on the countless numbers of unsung heroes. Men and women, Blacks AND Whites, who fought and died for the rights we now have. The inventors, executives, artists and athletes who broke barriers, broke records and fought prejudice all in quiet obscurity...THEY are the focus of this program. I hope you enjoy African American History Is AMERICAN History. Thank you. Harlin C. Kearsley https://youtube/watch?v=SSWWZ_ycFE0&feature=youtu.be https://youtube/watch?v=SSWWZ_ycFE0&feature=youtu.be
