Harper Government Provides 2.5 Million Dollars For Yarmouth Ferry Terminal Upgrades. Monday, January 20th 2014 The Federal Government has provided a financial boost for work at the Yarmouth Ferry Terminal. West Nova MP Greg Kerr announced this afternoon at Yarmouth Town Hall, that the Harper Government is investing 2.5 million dollars for the rehabilitation of the terminal, and custom annex building. Kerr was joined by Yarmouth Mayor Pam Mood, Warden and Yarmouth Area Industrial Commission Chair Murray Goodwin, Argyle Warden Aldric dEntremont and Yarmouth Deputy Mayor Jim MacLeod, among others at the announcement. The funding will be used for projects that are currently under way, such as upgrades to the buildings mechanical systems, and the installation of new roofs and doors. Goodwin tells CJLS, the buildings interior has been gutted, and work is continuing on schedule. Phase one was to clean the building out, that was completed the first week of January. Phase two is to do roof work on both buildings, refurbish all the electrical, ventilation, ceilings, interior things like plumbing and mechanical upgrades. That should be done early to mid April. Were in the process now of working with customs and the ferry operator on things in building number two, which would be some booths and work on the pontoon, and repairs to the wharf. Were still in the process of getting quotes for that. Kerr tells CJLS, the funding announcement didnt surprise many. As we said, wed provide funding to get the bulk of the work done for the start-up in May. I must say, I have nothing but praise for everyone that has been involved. The Minister stepped in and helped clear some obstacles out of the way. Locally, theyve been co-operative and positive. It sounds straight forward, but its not. I think today was just recognizing that today was a big step, and now were looking forward to having everything ready for May. Its a good day. Mood says there have been a lot of milestones on the journey to re-establish ferry service to Maine, and this is a big one. Its the next step in what has been a really long process. We can start to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Its exciting, and on top of everything, its a great indication of how all the parties have worked together, federally, provincially and municipally. The cruise ship Nova Star, through STM Quest, is expected to begin providing ferry service from Yarmouth to Portland, Maine on May 1.
