Harvard Nutritionist Questions Cows Milk Say it Aint So! by Teri Jaklin ND It didnt take me long after I started to study naturopathic medicine to come to the understanding that MILK IS FOR BABY COWS! It warms the cockles of my heart to hear this coming out of one of our revered medical education institutes. While still a cautious statement from the worlds most influential nutritionist it speaks volumes to our cultural belief that milk, cheese and bread are staples. Not any more. The quality of modern commercial dairy has the nutritional value of wall paper paste...very little. It provides large antigenic molecules that confuse the immune system. It binds the same receptors in the brain as gluten does with potentially the same outcomes. It is phlegm-forming and on and on. It can be very challenging to stay healthy in a sick world. And it is hard for some (including some medical physicians) to get their heads around the fact that food is medicine. It impacts every single aspect of your health. It is the single most important step in health recovery and maintenance. The thing we tend to lose sight of in our beautiful country is that as far as countries go we (and our US neighbours) are new. We have few laws to protect food and its processing, and comparatively unending marketing resources to SELL food, and the apparent lack of ethics to market addictive junk food to children! - Willets comment is Children, especially, are being “massively exploited and encouraged” to eat foods damaging their health. “We can’t let this go on.” Top that with very very powerful political lobbies to protect and promote the suppliers - even in the face of faltering science - and you have an environment where the unsuspecting consumer can get very confused. Willet comments the Canada Food Guides recommendations for dairy consumption is overstated - no arguments here - and that yogurt is one of the best ways to get dairy if you do eat it - I do disagree there but thats my prerogative. IF you choose to eat yogurt from raw goat/sheep milk that you make yourself and ferment for 2 days, OK. anything with an aluminium top on it, nope. Here are a few of my clinical observations (12 years worth) on dairy. -if you are prone to colds/pneumonia/bronchitis dairy is an absolute contraindication. -if you suffer from allergies dairy is an absolute contraindication. -if you are sensitive to gluten on any level dairy is an absolute contraindication. -if you struggle with constipation dairy is an absolute contraindication. -if you are challenged by hormonal imbalance dairy is an absolute contraindication. -if you have any serious health condition dairy is an absolute contraindication. -if your health condition is autoimmune dairy is an absolute contraindication. Please read this article if youre not yet convinced. Share your thoughts, Id love to hear them. Teri
