Harvey still remains in hospital. What should have been a 2 day - TopicsExpress

Harvey still remains in hospital. What should have been a 2 day admission is now into its second week. Harvey had to go to theatre last Wednesday, his bladder is not working properly now so we have had to have another tube fitted to assist with this. He is holding into a lot of fluid around his body which is keeping him in a very positive fluid balance. We have reduced his intake but still we are struggling to dry him out to shift the fluid. Harvey has had to have treatment to correct his clotting in his blood, and is also on daily diuretics to help with the fluid which hasnt helped so far so the dose has been increased. Harvey liver is suffering due to the urine infections he has had over the past months and also the antibiotics he has needed for the infections. The only thing that will truly help his liver is a good amount of feed and to get off the TPN or at least down to only needing TPN 2-3 times a week as a pose to 7. Today Harvey will be having an iron transfusion because his hb (iron levels) are dropping daily. TPN can not give enough iron in the bag so this not an uncommon thing to happen. The medication he is on for his liver has been increased today too, again, this will not really improve things, hopefully will help though. His consultant has gone to speak to his respiratory consultant about trying to re feed Harvey. The issue we have is that when we feed him his chest gets bad. Harvey will be going to theatre again in a couple of weeks to look into his lungs as these are an issue. He has needed oxygen for the past week continuously and sometimes needing a fair bit. He will also be having another test so we have evidence to present to the surgeon to help us get the operation that could help Harvey feed again. We didnt think things could get much worse for Harvey, but they are. He still continues to smile at us and is in high spirits. We just want him home now. He improved loads when we got him home last July so I am keeping my fingers crossed that this will be the case again.
