St Paddys day story #1: It started around 1982 or so. Patty was our favorite bartender at the Red Coach Grill on oldRrte. 395 in Escondido,Ca. I went in a couple of times for a happy hour drink and bonded on the day the Chargers played the Bengals in Cincinnati in a sub-zero degree football play-off game. I took the Bengals and shared my winnings by spending most of it at the Red Coach before leaving that long wonderful afternoon. Patty and I became friends that day. That next March I invited her out to celebrate St. Patricks day and that began an annual event for the next several years. She always took that day off and I managed to do the same. We would start early (10 a.m. or so) at the Red Coach with a coffee laced with Irish whiskey and proceed from there with the thought of hitting every bar in town for a brew or two. Some of the bars served free corned beef and cabbage and we didnt suffer for any lack of food. Some of the establishments were real saloons and gin-mills of the old type where a beer and a shot was the drink of the day, any day. Every bartender new Patty and that served us well as some of these sites were notorious for various reasons. But on St paddys day everyone seemed to be in a great mood and we always had a wonderful time. As time went by and Patty and I got older we started slowing down a bit but we almost always lasted until 5 pm when we would return to the Red Coach for one last drink for the road. In March of 1988 we were sitting next to each other at the bar at the Escondido hotel celebrating another St Pattys day when we both looked at each other and simultaneously had the same thought which I voiced with a Were getting to old for this shit and we both smiled at each other and that was our last holiday together as I moved back to Rochester NH in June of that year.
