Has partisan politics plunged the country into political turmoil? - TopicsExpress

Has partisan politics plunged the country into political turmoil? And if so, is it time for a partisanship break during which we will be governed by a national government of technocrats consisting of representatives of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the TUC and other identifiable bodies? According to Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, the answers to these questions are in the affirmative! Although his holiness made his observation today, I verily believe and dare say that the same observations were made by General Kutu Acheampong when he mooted what he called UNIGOV, an idea that Ghanaians soundly rejected in a referendum. Were Ghanaians wrong in rejecting UNIGOV in those days and is his holiness right about his call for a National Government of Technocrats for todays Ghana? I hate to repeat myself but I am left with no options. So here I come again! There is nothing inherently and fatally wrong with our current political system. To be sure, like any complex system, it needs repairs here and there. What then is wrong? I identify 2 issues: (1) the people who run the system and the aban mindset that they bring to governance compounded by (2) the people who are governed and the soccer fan mentality that they bring to defending the people who mismanage their national resources. So I will say without any equivocation that the so called government of technocrats would not change much. In fact, most of our current political woes have been enabled by the technocrats. The whole billion dollar judgment debt industry was facilitated, if not partnered, by technocrats. In consequence, the government that his holiness recommends will replace politicians with technocrats but achieve very little else and will continue the current trajectory of wasted opportunities and resources. We have tried one party state, multi party systems, senior military liberation, redemption and council, junior military revolution and defence, etc. to the same effect. In sum, our collective redemption and destiny do not lie in some yet to be discovered constitutional design or supra political system. The solution is rather simple! We the people are the architects of our destiny. When we vote for and celebrate bad governance, we must expect bad governance outcomes. We must stop asking what political structures or designs can redeem this country from the current morass and start asking what each of us can do to make the systems work! That will require each of us to know, lobby for and vote for our interests. That will require each of us to know that politicians must serve us and not the other way round! In sum, we must stop treating politics like soccer and we must stop politicians, whoever they are, from wasting and converting our resources! Da Yie!
