Hasta la vista, Huaraz! Its been real. A few interesting observations: The surrounding landscape is beautiful. The town has many parks, but they are different from American ones. Although there are small lawns and gardens, theyre all fenced in, with many signs asking you not to walk on them. Other than a bed, I havent touched the ground in over a week. There is no place to simply sit on the earth, unless you dont mind sharing your seat with whatever filth preceded your presence there. Also, the parks are populated with young lovers here. It is strangely refreshing. The teenagers hang out in public parks, sitting on the benches (not the ground), entwined in all geometric expressions of embrace, kissing, hugging, and generally pursuing outlets for lifes early geysers of hormonal compulsions. Also, internet cafes are packed with locals. Apparently, most people do not own personal computers. Oh, and pay phones are everywhere along the streets outside of small shops and tiendas. All in all, Huaraz reminds me of life in a time machine set for 1970. These little, simple things offer a change in perspective.
