Hastings Nyirenda, who is famously known as Hizmajest Hizzo is flying Zimbabwe’s flag high in the South African music industry. Born on the 9th of January 1991 in Budiriro, music was a passion for him from an early age. During his tenure at Churchill Boys High School Hastings, with the help of his friends, Gary Tight, Godfrey Jet and the late Tino Mahara, created a group named Zion Originated. His passion for music led him to enroll at the University of the Witwatersrand where he is doing a Bachelor of Music degree. Hastings continues to soar to new heights as he was the youngest conductor in training to conduct a professional orchestra. His talent in music has seen him playing the percussion for the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, the Symphonic Wind Band and the Johannesburg Youth Jazz Ensemble. Hastings has also proven that his talents also venture into the business industry. He is the founder of Hastings Music Academy which stretches to a number of SADC countries. These countries include South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana. Hastings Music Academy has also taken its brand to Kenya and has also successfully opened an academy in Bolivia. In 2013 Hastings was the youngest musician to attend the Johannesburg Orff Course in Sandton. This course equips music teachers with the necessary skills to teach children the art of music. As expected, the 23 year old year old young man made a lasting impression as he was described as being, “the most enthusiastic young music teacher.” Hastings is affectionately known as ‘Uncle H’ by the kids he teaches under a Non -Profit Organization named Music Enlightenment Project. Under the tutelage of Penny Jackson, who is a profound music educator, Hastings has grown and matured as a musician. He is truly on his way to achieving his long term goal of “Passing music knowledge to the next generation.” Hastings’ achievements continue to grow as he has now been part of the selected few musicians to attend the intense and highly competitive San Francisco Orff in USA.
