Hate invasive weeds as much as we do? Looking for a great cause to support on Saturday? Well, look no further: you can help Beat Back Buffelgrass in Ironwood Forest National Monument. Check out the video for some background on this nonnative weed and the details below for how to help. Buffelgrass is THE most significant threat to our homes, businesses, and all the plants and animals that make this such a great place to live. The Friends of Ironwood Forest (FIF) and DM Hikers are supporting Beat Back Buffelgrass Day on Saturday January 24th. We will remove buffelgrass in the San Maniego Hills northwest of the Red Hills area off of Silver Bell Road. Terrain is rocky and sloped, however, we are working along the lower perimeter of the hill and along a wash. The event is from 8AM to Noon with lunch provided by FIF. Volunteers are needed to dig buffelgrass, for carpools and to help with preparation and serving lunch. Register at: Buffelgrass.org You can also contact Jim Avramis directly at: jimavramis@gmail What To Bring: Work gloves, water bottle, tools, if you have them (BLM will supply tools but some of you have your favorite :)). Water for refilling your water bottles and snacks will be provided. What to Wear: Hiking boots, hat, sunscreen, and other appropriate working clothes; layers work best as the weather warms with the day. Carpools: There are two carpool sites, DM Park and Marana Airport. We will depart DM Park at 7AM and pass by Marana Airport where we will join with other volunteers and depart by 7:30AM. Directions: From I10 Exit 236 (Marana Exit) turn Right on Trico-Marana Road to Silver Bell Road. Stay on Silver Bell driving past Red Hill Road.
