Hats off to the ‘working’ truckers Earlier today, at around 6.30pm December 24th, families around the country were gathering to either enjoy a Christmas Eve dinner or to just be together in preparation for Christmas Day. All work was done by all. Well, not exactly. As my family as I were driving towards my wife’s mom’s place in Howick to spend Christmas with ‘Granny’, we came across a lone Timber 24 truck being loaded with wood near Curry’s Post. The conditions were misty and sombre. I wondered why they were still working so – with gentle sighs from my ever-patient family when travelling with me - I stopped, turned around and was privileged to meet a man who is an absolute inspiration. His name is Elias Sibisi, the driver of the Timber 24 truck being loaded. He was not going home. Once the truck was loaded, he was heading for Durban to offload at Sappi. I asked if he would then be going home. “No, I’m working right through to January.” I thought he would be annoyed at this but no. He was just fine with it all. “I’m happy. I’m working,” was his easy reply. And he was genuine. On this Christmas Eve, FleetWatch uses the video below featuring Elias as a representative of all truck drivers who, by the nature of the various sectors they are operating in, will be working right through and will not be with their families tomorrow on Christmas Day. Keep them in mind when you raise your glasses and join us in saluting each and every one of them. And to those who will be at home with their families, FleetWatch wishes you all a Happy Christmas. God Bless you all. youtu.be/M-N1QaaBOsM
