Haughty, generous, debonair, adamant, uncompromising, self-made, defiant, non-conformist - he was all of these but, above all, he was a genius of a composer. He created a place for himself in Hindi film music with his unique style with great preludes and interludes, meandering notes and beats that instantly identified him. If a particular singer happened to be in his disfavour, well, the loss was not of the music director but of that singer. And in such cases, he chose other singers and extracted the best out of them and made them famous. If he got B grade movies to compose for, he didnt mind - the movies are remembered years later solely for the music he gave. He used varied instruments, including many western ones or sometimes he used hardly any instruments (he could merrily compose songs without any percussion instrument, for example) - what mattered was the requirement of his composition. Hardly any other music director has been able to even mimic his style. O P Nayyar - whose birth anniversary is celebrated today.- came to be known as the Rhythm King and became a legend in his lifetime.
