Have I told you all how much I love you!!! todays playlist... 1. Dennis Holseybrook Go for A Ride 2. Duncan Faure (with La Fleur Fatale) How Long Is Too Long duncanfauremusic/ reverbnation/duncanfauremusic Duncan Faures amazing vocal range, style, depth of emotion, and his songwriting, have been compared to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Elton John 3. The Beatles The Long And Winding Road 4. Keith Williams Got To Get Back To You Gotta Get Back to You was inspired by Rick Nelsons song Lonesome Town. That song was one of the first songs I learned on guitar. It was about a guy who lost his girl and ended up in a place called Lonesome Town. I wrote this song trying to be the opposite of that, with the guy trying to get back to his girl. reverbnation/bkeithwilliams freewebs/bkwilliams/ 5. Ricky Nelson Lonesome Town 6. Miami Dan & the Hayes Street Band (written by Daniel Yoe & Keith Williams) Felt Like Love Felt Like Love was originally titled It Was Love and was inspired by John Cougar Mellancamps song Cherry Bomb. In addition to the change in title, several of the lyrics from It Was Love were changed for the Hayes Street Band recording of the song. For example, there is a lyric in Cherry Bomb that says 17 has now turned 35. One of the original lyrics in my song was well Im 35 and Im lookin back. For the Hayes Street Band recording, though, Miami Dan changed that lyric to well Im older now and Im lookin back. reverbnation/bkeithwilliams freewebs/bkwilliams/ miamidan/ 7. Jemi Blue ( Janice Zummo on vocals with Vinnie Zummo) Sunday Supper I wrote Sunday Supper after having a conversation with a friend about things we each remember and cherish from our childhood. She told me about her Italian familys tradition of having supper together every Sunday and how much she loves thinking about it now that her parents have passed away. Something about the story resonated with me, and I thought the story would make a good song. Vinnie Zummo and I had discussed collaborating on a song, and after I sent him the song we decided it would be cool for his wife, Janice, to do the vocal. Vinnie and Janice both did a great job, and I appreciated the opportunity to work with such talented musicians. https://soundcloud/jemi-blue https://soundcloud/vinnie-zummo 9. Dan Fogelberg Leader Of The Band 10. Wily Bo Walker & Karena Rendezvous Des Cheminots Ooh! a ref track (so so many!!!) :-) I guess anything with Louis Prima/Keeley Smith I particularly like Keeley Smiths version of Sing, Sing, Sing - she called it Swing Swing Swing Louis Prima did a version as well of course (as did a load of my heroes of that era!!!) The start of Rendezvous is a direct nod to Billie Holiday. Some Of These Days The only version of that track I have of her singing it is on the Verve Collection - The Complete Billie Holiday 1945-1959 where she is in rehearsal so there only about a minute of the track. Anyway, Kareña does a great version of it so I added that as foley to the front of the track. I reference Billie Holiday throughout the song in the lyrics of course. The song itself is another from my diary (of course, all my songs are!!!) so its a true story veiled in a reference to Jean Paul Sartres existential novel La Nausée I penned the lyrics originally when I lived in Paris for a while a long, long time ago! Although I have worked versions of this song over the years it wasnt until I started working on my solo album Moon Over Indigo and hooked up with a load of great horn players from New York that I could get the track sounding as I originally heard it with that huge swing vibe. Kareña, of course, adds the icing to the song with her fab backing vocal arrangements!!! She is quite brilliant at that! :-) Thanks for playing this one, Deborah. Glad you like it. wilybo/ torchsongdiva.tumblr/ 11. Billie Holiday Some Of These Days 12. Trouble Clef (Tim Ross) Tank Tank came about during a turbulent time in Trouble Clef’s history. Members were moving to other parts of the country, we were breaking up and tensions were high. This stormy situation allowed us to make our swansong, the album “In Your Face”. We stopped trying to please the masses and just let the muse guide us as we had nothing to lose. It ended up being a series of melancholy and melodic songs which became TC’s highest acclaimed album. Tank is my personal favorite. It is a huge departure from the band’s style, integrating hints reminiscent of the post apocalyptic sci-fi sounds of Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds and the soaring spiritual feel of Dead Can Dance. The song I chose as an influence is “Beyond” from the Moody Blues. Taken from my favorite album of all time “To Our Children’s Children’s Children”, it illustrates how great a rock instrumental in different movements can be and paints a psychedelic, retro futuristic desert landscape. apologynone/ 13. The Moody Blues Beyond 14.Apology None (co-write with Vinnie Zummo) Lend Me A Handle Vinnie Zummo and Apology None had a lot of fun making grooves on the AN song Really Really Really and decided to have another go at it for the new Apology None album “Satur-Delia: The Original Soundtrack.” Vinnie laid out some groovy Beatle-esc backing tracks and I was inspired to make arrangements reminiscent of the Mamas and the Papas and Spanky and our Gang. What resulted is an eerie piece of psychedelia, dripping with a dark hued mix of strings, slide guitars and vocal harmonies . We chose the Beatles song “She Said She Said”. A track with the classic Beatles sound and a time signature change which can be heard in this tune as well. apologynone/ https://soundcloud/vinnie-zummo 15. The Beatles She Said She Said 16.The Penguin Party All Stars (Dave Milligan, Butch Barnette & Dennis Holseybrook) The Ballad Of Zorro the Cat A few years back Crystal Cavern’s producer Deborah Milstein found Dave Milligan on the internet when she was looking for another chap with the same name (but that’s another story for another time). She quickly introduced him to Songsmith’s Music Motel, Dennis Holseybrook’s superb radio show that is still running to this day. Dave became immersed in the Motel’s chatroom, characters and folklore, and it soon became apparent that Deb’s cat, Zorro, was a bit of a legend on the show. Dennis would sing to Zorro on air from California, and the cat, hundreds of miles away in Brooklyn, would nuzzle the speakers excitedly in response to hearing her name. Gradually, this became something of a cult on the show, and other acts began to submit songs for Zorro. Dave belatedly got in on the act and wrote and recorded The Ballad Of Zorro The Cat for Dennis’s show, using the feel and indeed the first two words of his brother’s band The Heaters’ version of BB King and Eric Clapton’s “Days Of Old” as a jumping off point. The Penguin Party thought it would be very fitting to have Dennis guest on the track as he’s integral to the story, and also ‘cos his authentic American blues voice and godlike piano playing would add a bit of credibility to our pasty-arse English blues effort. We got another of the show’s regulars and another big Zorro fan, the legendary Butch Barnette, to sing a verse and play some mean blues harp on the track for even more proper “from the source” blues cred, and the best blues band that has never met was born! The whole thing was accomplished via email and file transfers, but we really sound like we’re all rocking out in the same room. We would dearly love to play this track live with Dennis and Butch one fine day. The version you’re about to hear is the original version as recorded for The Music Motel. The track also features a sneaky sample of “Hole” by The Big I Am right near the end as an in-joke for fans of the show, as Zorro was a huge fan of the band. The forthcoming album “Mesherlek”, by the Penguin Party, will feature a slight reworking of the track with Dave Milligan’s drums replaced by the Penguin Party’s proper drummer Johnny H, and extra backing vocals by Sarah Holburn, just ‘cos she loves the song so much. thepenguinparty.moonfruit/ reverbnation/butchbarnette reverbnation/dennisholseybrook 17. The Heaters (written by Eric Clapton & BB King) Days Of Old 18. Dirk Speksnijder & Gerald Maguire aka The Chuffboxes All Kinds Of Strangers As youre just about to depart for Merry Olde England, this is a very apt choice, Deborah! I had All Kind of Strangers around for ages, but couldnt get any lyrics together until Mr Gerald Maguire came up with these. He and I were both knocking around the Warwickshire music scene in the early 80s and were involved with the same bands, but, bizarrely, dont really remember each other - both instantly forgettable! The song talks of simpler times, no mobile phones or internet and how we had to write songs with paper and pen! Wow, no auto-spell! How did we manage? So the influence track isnt really an influence track but an example of one of the bands from way back then that I was in along with musicians (we were all very young and learning!) that Gerald also played with. Its called Dial Mmm by the ironically named Chart Material, comprising myself, Tracy Sax Litterick, Frank Bass Hutchinson, Tim Drums Bragg and Gary Big Organ Stokes - all of whom have been reconnected -after 30 years!- by the internet. Gary wrote and sang the song which (he wont mind me saying) is made all the more catchy by its innocence and simplicity......recorded in 81 at a real recording studio on real reel tape and recovered from cassette......cheers, Dirk https://soundcloud/dirk-speksnijder https://soundcloud/new-cabrones https://soundcloud/the-chuffboxes 19. Chart Material Dial Mmm 20. Jemi Blue (Paul Butler on vocals & guitar) Dont Look To Closely Since I am not a singer, I usually have someone in mind to record the songs I write. Frequently, I write the lyrics with a pretty specific melody in mind and send both to that particular person. Believe me when I say I am not a singer, and I think the unfortunate folks who have been the recipients of these melody lines, which I always sing into my iPhone recorder, will confirm this. I knew when I wrote Dont Look Too Closely that the enormously talented Paul Butler was the perfect person for the song. I could only dream that he would say yes, and, amazingly, he did. The song came to me after I read a blog someone wrote wherein she mentioned that she was waiting at a traffic light when she saw a young man soliciting money beside the road. She opined that he appeared not to want to make eye contact with any of the drivers stopped at the light, and it got me to thinking about how that must certainly be so. I wanted to write only about him and how I believed he must feel in such a horrible circumstance, without getting into any of the broader implications. https://soundcloud/jemi-blue paulbutler-music 21. Dan Fogelberg Run For The Roses 22. Keith Fellows (with Dave Milligan & Duggy Degs) The London to Brighton Car Race Seeing as its a kind of MUSICAL number I think the influence would have to have come from Consider Yourself from the musical OLIVER which is my favourite all time musical. Lionel Bart was a genius and couldnt write a note of music and had to sing all his tunes to someone else so they could do the score. What a guy! reverbnation/keithfellowsunpublished thepenguinparty.moonfruit/ reverbnation/beachyheadmusicclub 23. Lionel Bart (Oliver) Consider Yourself 24. Dennis Holseybrook Go For A Ride outro...
