Have a Great Day! Putting into practice what St. John says is the best way to perfect our “ora et labora.” Keep them up, and God bless you! F. Philip, OSB St. John the Baptist was perhaps the greatest saint along with St. Joseph, after Mary. The reason, in many respects, being that he showed the two virtues of obedience and humility to an eminent degree. He was prepared for this by supposedly his thirty years in the desert, living off the land until the day of his manifestation to Israel. When his time came he used it to preach the coming of the Lord, baptizing in the river Jordan, even Christ Himself. His role in salvation history was indeed great, in fact, unique, ending his life by being beheaded by King Herod at the request of Herodias. Some people, however, miss the total message delivered by St. John. The whole efficacy of his mission in seen in the example of obedience and humility, shown even before his birth, when he recognized Christ at the Visitation supposedly, leaping in the womb of Elizabeth. He played a role that was in imitation of Christ, because obedience and humility, after all, were the message of Christ who came not to do His own will but that of the Father. Although by nature He was God, he humbled Himself, becoming obedient unto death out of love for us. In returning this love, we should ever keep this in mind and put it into practice.
