Have been learning about some aspects of permaculture that might offer some benefits in our arid climate. First is water retention, the idea of having the water we receive move through the land as slowly as possible. What looks most promising in large scale is the use of terraces, gabions and swales. The al-baydha project and the Greening the Desert site in Jordan have used these techniques very effectively. Second, there is a water retention technique called hugelkultur that uses wood to absorm and then slowly release soil moisture. I think there are opportunities to completely re-thing the way we interact with the little water we receive in the desert. youtube/watch?v=Lp1nwt_XmY0
