Have the hangers-on taken over? The Ryder Cup is one of the showpiece events of world sport. Deservedly so. The 40th staging of this famous competition was as compelling as ever, yet the number of famous faces inside the ropes was at times unpalatable. Some were legitimately in situ – Sir Alex Ferguson, for example, who spoke to the Europe team in the buildup, and Alex Salmond had good reason to be present. Other names were more perplexing, and at times an annoyance for spectators whose greenside views were inhibited. Ruud Gullit, the actor James Nesbitt, the entrepreneur Peter Jones and Brian of Westlife fame were treated to the best views on the course while Paul Lawrie, a former Ryder Cup and Open champion, took his place outside the ropes.
