Have you ever been forced to "eat crow" as I have on a number of occasions with my often highly inaccurate sporting predictions. Of course it means to acknowledge a mistake and suffer the public humiliation that goes with it. The phrase "eating crow" became the subject of a story reported in the Atlanta Constitution in 1888. The story told the tale of an American soldier in the War of 1812, who shot a crow during a ceasefire. A British officer complimented the soldier on his shooting and asked to see the gun, which he turned on the soldier, reprimanding him for trespassing, and forcing the soldier to eat a piece of the dead crow. Although the story is from 19th century America it is much like the older English Umble (Humble) Pie metaphor from the Middle Ages....the origins of modern things....
