Have you ever heard the saying If it seems too good to be true, it probably is? As many cannabis consumers around the globe have pre-emptively applauded the Uruguay government for legalizing marijuana, few have critically analysed the politics which are implementing it. Though many people seem to be won over by the initial price of $1 per gram (one-eighth of what it costs at most US dispensaries) few consumers have determined why this is so. Unlike US dispensaries which offer a diverse range of strains for consumer needs (whether they be patient or connoisseur) Mujica’s government will be limiting the country to low-grade product, have it fenced in by the army (like some cannabis internment camp) and “private producers” (individual Uruguay citizens) will be restricted by the state’s ambiguous “certain conditions”. This is socialism in action, the dismantling of a market economy via state interventionism (regulation and increased taxation). Consumers should keep in mind that cannabis can still be legalized under a deregulated Laissez-faire economy.
