Have you heard of the great Scholar Muhyiddin Ibn Arabi? This great man came unto many of his understanding, especially his extremely positive and open minded views regarding women, through one of his teachers and spiritual guides. Fatima Bint Al Mathna—her knowledge and spirituality was so vast that the young and old, men and women, the rich and poor alike would all seek to learn from her. Ibn Arabi came under her tutelage when he was at a young age and she was in her nineties. He continued to learn from her and serve her for many years, and he and two of her other students built her a small abode from stalks of reed so that she may have a place to stay. She lived there until her death. Ibn Arabi benefited from her greatly and is recorded to have said of her— “She was a mercy to this world”. He also said of her, “she was purity and elegance in itself; when she lectured for hours I would follow, when she abridged she left all speechless, when she elaborated, everyone understood. She was a sun amongst scholars, a garden amongst poets, knowledge was her work. When around her you would feel like you are in the presence of holiness; when you saw her work, you felt like you were in the presence of a king.” This amazing woman’s legacy was in Ibn Arabi—who learned a vast amount from her and imparted that knowledge unto us.
