Have you heard the voice of your conscience saying things like, “Do you remember the sins you committed against your wife three years ago” or “Why are you surprised that your child is not talking to you? You were never around when they needed you”? There are people who feel depressed because of a sense of guilt, and they “pay” for their sins by being sick, physically, mentally or emotionally. Doctors are discovering that many psychosomatic sicknesses are caused by guilt and condemnation because the conscience is saying, “You have done wrong. You must be punished. How can God not punish you?” This was the question of Adam and Eve? Now, since the fall of Adam and Eve, every person has a conscience! Remember in the Garden of Eden, it was an age of innocence, until they ate of the Tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil, thereby, either activating the conscience or obtaining it. The knowledge of Good and Evil gave birth to the activity of the conscience and Adam and Eve sewed fig leaves together to cover their nakedness before God. See Genesis chapter 3. The English term conscience is derived from the Latin word conscientia, which literally means joint knowledge. South gives the following definition and excellent illustration of the meaning of the term conscience: The work of the conscience then is what YOU Believe to be right and True, and to forbid what you believe to be wrong. However, if one believes something to be truth which is false, or believes something to be false which is truth, then the conscience clearly cannot be an infallible monitor of what is right or wrong. So a mans conscience is Governed by the KNOWLEDGE which YOU have of right and wrong. If that knowledge is incomplete or faulty then YOUR conscience can make errors. But let us see what the Bible teaches about conscience. Romans 2:12-16 For all who have sinned without the Law will also perish without the Law, and all who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law; 13 for it is not the hearers of the Law who are just before God, but the doers of the Law will be justified. For when Gentiles who do not have (and were never under) the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves (by way of conscience), 15 in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them, 16 on the day when, according to my (Pauls) gospel, God will judge the secrets of men through Christ Jesus. Yes, your conscience must be answered or else it will drive you to sickness or distraction, but in order to answer your conscience, you must have an answer that will satisfy it WITH TRUTH. ALL OF MY SINS, were punished to the maximum in the body of Jesus Christ! And as a Born Again Believer saved by Grace through Faith alone, there remains no more punishment for me today, for how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse my conscience!” Ephesians 2:8-9 For by (Gods) grace you have been saved through faith (alone); and that not of yourselves, it is the (free) gift of God; 9 not as a result of (any) works, so that no one may boast. Yes, the only KNOWLEDGE THAT WILL BRING PEACE TO YOUR CONSCIENCE, IS IN THE TRUTH of the Cross of Jesus... So the next time your conscience CONDEMNS YOU, BECAUSE OF SIN, don’t try to silence it by ANY good works. Instead, remember what the Bible says about the Truth of God, in this matter of conscience. Hebrews 9:14-15 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal (Holy) Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 For this reason He is the mediator of a new covenant, so that, since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. youtube/watch?v=dm-hF_cLQg8
