Have you let your wealth become Mammon? In the Bible, “Mammon means possessions or property. Today we might legitimately translate Mammon as things, money, gain, or success. These become a spiritual force working with tremendous attracting power to draw us into its orbit and out from under the service of Christ” (Bruner). In Matthew 6:24, we are told that “you cannot serve both God and Mammon. Some of us equate wealth to our significance, others to our security. When we have wealth, we feel important or we feel like we’re in control. Money affords us better things, better places to eat, better experiences, and it makes us feel safe to have it stored up in the bank just in case. We therefore find ourselves making many life decisions around the pursuit of and retention of wealth. This is the power we ascribe to money. This is money becoming Mammon in our lives. But if we’re being honest, money is not that powerful. It does not have the power to truly give us what we want. Only a relationship to and dependence on God can do that for us. Under this realization, the writer of Proverbs pens these words from Proverbs 30:7-9: “Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord? ’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.” Today, reflect on this prayer and ask God to help you know if you are developing a dependence on money that replaces His honored position as the provider in your life.
