Have you noticed the signs? Decreased athletic performance Change in attitude/lethargy Delayed shedding and winter coat coming in earlier Regional or generalized long hair Regional fat deposits- neck, tail head, above eyes. Laminits/founder Muscle atrophy Rounded abdomen Increased sweating Polyuria/polydypsia (urinating and drinking a lot) Recurrent infections such as sole abscesses Hyperglycemia Neurologic deficits/blindness These are all potential signs of Equine Cushings Disease or PPID. If your horse has two or more of these signs, call to set up an appointment for evaluation. There are blood tests to evaluate for this disorder. Dont wait for the signs to become worse, as successful treatment outcomes are better with earlier care. Pergolide is the treatment of choice, though sometimes combination of medications is necessary.
