With effect from April 2008 responsibility for stray dogs was removed from the Police and given to the Local Authority under Section 68 of the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act. Photo of dog The Act is very specific and places all responsibility for dealing with stray dogs on the Local Authority, this includes powers for seizing stray dogs, for accepting them from members of the public, all record keeping and returning them to their owners. If you find a stray dog please DO NOT bring it to your local Police Station. You need to report this on the following number - During Office Hours – Monday to Friday 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. telephone 01642 526575 Out of Hours – Monday to Friday, weekends and Bank Holidays telephone 01642 618946 ...then hopefully they can be reunited with their Mum or Dad.
