Have you seen upstream of the Conococheague Creek Aqueduct in Williamsport lately? It may look a bit different than you remember. Today, the C&O Canal NHP and the Town of Williamsport announced the contract for a design and engineering study for rehabilitation and re-watering of the Conococheague Aqueduct. The rehabilitation reflects an important time in Williamsport history when, after an April 1920 collapse, a wooden wall was built so the canal could continue operations. The long term goal is the restoration of canal operations at Williamsport, reflecting the early 1920s. Lock 44 and the lockhouse have been restored; next year, the railroad lift bridge will be raised and the pump that supplies water to the basin replaced. Once the aqueduct is watered, Williamsport will be the only place in North America where you will be able to ride a boat over an aqueduct, under a railroad lift bridge and lock through an operational canal lock. Your trip will take you through the highest concentration of historic structures along the Canal! The Town of Williamsport and C&O Canal NHP continue to work together on funding strategies for the aqueduct restoration, but completing the design and engineering study is a huge first step towards the goal. On your next visit you will notice that crews have been clearing trees to reveal a field of stones in the Canal prism, stones that made up the missing wall of the aqueduct. Well be posting updates as the work continues... (bjh)
