Have your say: East West Link (road tunnel). DUE Friday 5 - TopicsExpress

Have your say: East West Link (road tunnel). DUE Friday 5 July! This road tunnel should not be funded ahead of public transport. I support the campaign "Trains not Toll Roads" which advocates for greater investment into public transport. Some facts are listed below about the East West Link... NO to East-West Toll Road - East West Toll Road will cost billions of dollars more to build ($8-15 billion), but only be used by around 20% of vehicles wanting to travel from east to west. - East West Toll Road will increase traffic on already congested inner Melbourne exits and roads such as Hoddle Street and Chandler Highway. - At least 80% of all vehicles will still exit to inner Melbourne areas (increasing congestion on Hoddle Street and other inner north-south roads) for access to jobs and services. - East West Toll Road is likely to attract significantly more freight from the Port of Hastings to the west. That’s a lot of big trucks (with noise and pollution) and induced traffic travelling through the eastern suburbs to the west. - Who stands to benefit? Not the 80% of eastern suburbs’ commuters stuck in traffic trying to exit at Hoddle Street or Chandler Highway to reach their inner Melbourne destination for work or other reasons. - East West Toll Road will ultimately mean more trucks, more congestion, more noise pollution and untold environmental and amenity issues for people living right along the eastern corridor. - To fund the cost of the expensive East West Toll Road, many much-needed public transport projects will be delayed or cancelled for years as no budget allocations will be available. Have your say on this project and I encourage you to let the State know we want greater investment into our Public Transport!
