Have your say: Somewhere along the line in the past few decades, a misunderstanding by tourism promoters had Phukets Tesakan Gin Jay เทศกาลกินเจ (literally, the Eat [a Chinese strict form of] Vegan Festival) branded the Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Peculiarly, many Thais struggle to even pronounce the word vegetarian and are surprised to learn that vegetarians can actually enjoy/tolerate some animal products, such as yogurt, milk, eggs and even fish for some... back to Phuket. The Tesakan Gin Jay, is and has always been a strict Vegan observance. FYI, the correct word for vegetarian in Thai is Mung Sawirut มังสวิรัติ (not Jay as in the festival that officially begins with tonights ceremony). Whats your take – should Thai-Chinese remain ignorant about the incorrect branding of their tradition for the sake of convenience and familiarity, or should they be educated, informed, and in future years consider reverting to a much simpler, and more correct brand i.e. The Veg Fest? For carnivores and most omnivores, it makes little difference, but for Vegans and Vegetarians, there is a huge, important difference. What do you think?
