Having A Devotional Moment If I have wounded any soul today If I have caused one foot to go astray If I have walked in my own willful way Dear Lord, forgive Forgive the sins I have confessed to Thee Forgive the secret sins I do not see Oh, guide me and love me and my keeper be Dear Lord, forgive This Evening Prayer comes upon me very heavily whenever I recall my Christian heritage. I am so grateful to those elders who on occasion sang it in such a way that my soul could recall it many years later. It wasnt sung often in a church service; and I probably couldnt count 10 times Ive heard it sung or recited. But, somehow, I remember it often as if it was one of our opening hymns or famous devotional songs. This song means much more to me now as a preacher. Preachers are always speaking into other peoples lives and influencing, to some extent, a perspective of truth that may be subject to personal bias. Oftentimes, and by faith, we speak forcibly about things we have not personally experienced; such as death, heaven or hell. We give our best understanding on the Scriptures that frame the decisions of many. We sometimes rebuke folk who should be encouraged and encourage folk who should be rebuked. We dont always get it right because we are human agents carrying a divine mantle. Furthermore, we sometimes shift our focus to ourselves in such a way that we forget we are servants. We complain that people do not honor us like they should; as if our reward is controlled by people. At times we get offended with God because we feel our many years of service should entitle us to better than we have received. In these hopefully momentary lapses, we lose our way with a trail of souls in tow. So, I am sometimes brought to tears when I hear the melody and these words stir in my soul. I am instantly humbled by my souls command to pause for self-examination. And, in that moment, I feel the presence of The Lord drawing near to comfort. He lifts up my head so I can experience what David called, the help of [His] countenance. Right then and there, I feel an increase of strength. Subsequently, I know why the bible says, men ought always to pray. You see, prayer sensitizes your spirit and sweeps your soul. When you talk to God sincerely, and you love God, you remember your mission to proclaim what another hymnologist describes as, the love that drew salvations plan and the grace that brought it down to man. You instinctively humble yourself to the awesome tune of FORGIVENESS...which is what the song in this post speaks about. I desire to be a better minister. I want to stay focused at all times on my assignment. I dont want to be so spiritually minded that I am no earthly good. I mean, I love being down to earth and I enjoy my dance lessons for real (Im getting good, too!). But, I dont ever want to promote my interests above those of God; and I dont want to miss ministry opportunities trying to obtain personal gains. I do want prosperity, but I most want to die a fruitful vessel who contributed to the salvation and spiritual health of others. Hence, I sing this prayer with all sincerity of heart, mind and soul.
