Having Trouble with Pushups? Client comes in today, new, and never experienced what i like to call the magic before. He has had a recent shoulder injury and while running through some testing found that he was having trouble doing pushups. The basic function of the pushup is to press with external rotation of the shoulder, elbow extension, and wrist flexion. Upon testing his external rotators with the NeuroKinetic Therapy protocol, they were all strong. I test his Pec Major both sternal and clavicular attachment at they were weak. I dont know about you, but doing a pushups without a pec is tough. We found that his brachioradialis in his forearm was facilitating his pec major sternal and clavicular attachment. We released the brachioradialis, retested the pec muscles, and they were strong as ever and had no pain. The problem wasnt a weak pushups, or poor pushup mechanics, or even a core problem. We didnt chase pain, but used it as a guide. He has a few other ares of homework, but this is step one to moving better, and feeling strong. I imagine his golf game will get back on track as well :)
