Rightly quoted by His Majesty the King, what we need today is the leadership of the self and not just a leader to lead the masses. In an increasingly globalized world where countries are more connected and interdependent than ever before, conflicts among the states in real sense of war has become a thing of the past. Gone are the days of absolute power struggle among states to prove their hegemony and create a uni-polar world order as with the case of world wars and cold war. The end of Cold War, fall of Berlin wall and the unity of North and South Vietnam does proves that the leaders that lead the masses are more connected with power struggle phenomena. As the world today is more peaceful and citizens more engaged, the concept of state building not just lies in the hand of the leaders but to a great extent at the hands of its people. The concept of liberty, justice, rights and equality are ever on the rise which has in a way seen every citizen a active contributor to nation building. The new concept of liberalism in which the present world is said to be functioning sees every individual as the potentialities to be realized and not just in terms of mere statistics or numbers. State building today is no more a military activity alone but involves complex sets of activities covering all sectors of human endeavor. Environment, Health, Education, Religion and Culture, Agriculture, Law and Order, Governance and External Relations are equally important to a country as its military. This is where the individual leadership and leadership of self come into action to carry out state activities related to different fields. A country may have a strong army, but its security is often questionable if it cannot meet the needs of its own citizen which can lead to internal conflicts. Most of the conflicts that occurs today is not between the states but within the states. Take for example South Asia as a region is faced with numerous challenges of this sort. Ethnic clashes, religious fundamentalism, political divergence, ideological clashes, poverty induced crimes and fight for natural resources and natural environment are some of the challenges faced by our region. The increasing complexities and challenges the world is facing today do require the leadership of the shelf. A leader who leads by the examples and encourages everyone to be the leaders of the self. The world needs individual citizens who have the urge to solve existing problems through innovative solutions for the sake of the society and for the country. The fifth King of Bhutan for example is the absolute leader who feels for his people and leads by examples. A lot of his action relates to what he speaks and does. The very idea of establishing the institution like the Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies shows his farsighted vision of ultimate nation building. A nation building process which involves every citizen as an active contributor after understanding the real purpose of nation building and processes involved in it. As nation building is a slow and gradual process it requires a constant and continuous motivation and occasional reminders from the leaders to its people. Some of his other actions include his intimate relationship with the people from all walks of life. His dedication and good feeling that every Bhutanese has witnessed over the time makes him the ultimate Dragon King in the last surviving Mahayana Buddhist Kingdom. The world today is said to have become more peaceful than ever before, but challenges still remain. The challenges the world is facing today cannot be solved by one or two states coming together but with a collective effort. A collective effort of all the world leaders, all states and all people. Some of the global issues like environmental challenges, pollution, global warming, poverty and hunger, disease outbreaks does not seem to recognize international borders but can easily harm all states. Therefore what the world needs today are the individual leaders who are self motivated to carry out great deeds. Deeds that are innovative, well intended and can bring changes and solve the challenges. The deeds that not only changes their community but the country as a whole and even beyond for the greater cause of the humanity.
