Having bored enough people in the past about how I really havent - TopicsExpress

Having bored enough people in the past about how I really havent enjoyed Xmas day for years, since when my daughter was younger and we spent the day together, yesterday brought the meaning of that day right back to me. A few weeks ago I was asked if Id be up for helping out serving Xmas lunch to those who are either on their own or homeless. Given my disdain for the over-the-top commercialism that diseases our festive season these days I didnt need asking twice-anything to get me out of that dreaded cycle of food, drink, rubbish tv, food, drink etc!! Well, I can honestly say its the best thing Ive done in ages. Now, its not about feeling good about myself, and I certainly dont need the compliments and the backslapping for doing something decent and giving something back!! Ill be honest, it was a lot more selfish that that. Yesterday was for me. And it was for me because I selfishly got to interact with people I normally have nothing to do with. And it was for me because I got to work, sing, and laugh with some people who are gifted with brilliant aware minds and humour but who, for whatever reasons find themselves on their own or in particularly unfortunate situations. And it was about me because after having a whole room full of people who through everyday have their own immense problems to deal with, found their singing voices and sang every damn word to every damn Xmas carol back to me, I was the one who came away from there knowing that they had made my day more special than they, as they wondered off back to normal life will ever know. Of course we can just go about doing Xmas the way we always do, and Im not on this planet to convince anyone that they should do what I did yesterday, but when weve all finished recycling the cardboard boxes and Roses wrappers like we do every year, and we start thinking of how to begin to chip away at that mountainous credit card bill like we do every year.......as far as having a brilliant time and feeling festive?......... Ive already signed up to do the same again next year. My heartfelt gratitude to Katy Broomfield and her Mum, Rita for getting me involved. Xx
