Having driven through SW London for the past month, I can confirm that I will not be cycling too and from work, even if I were to move just around the corner. Ive seen a couple of cyclists take the piss but they are most certainly in the minority. Ive seen a couple of incidents where drivers have literally aimed at cyclists to knock them off their bikes OR WORSE. Now, I know that if I came off my bike onto your car I will do far more damage to it at low speeds than it will do to me, not least because I carry quite a heavy bike pump and a torch, ill leave that to your imagination. You think whiplash hurts? I think the government must do more to protect cyclists. Firstly, introduce an MOT for cycles. A basic health check and tune up, costing less than £10 a year would ensure that the bike is safe for use on the road. Have some kind of registration plate so that the bike can be traced, like a car. Some cyclists, particularly couriers do take the piss and they should be accountable if they cause an accident. Secondly, introduce tax discs for bikes. Like classic vehicle tax, they shouldnt cost anything. Thirdly, make helmets compulsory. And lastly, make helmet cameras and hi vis kit cheaper so that everybody can afford them, not just suits. We should be taking our examples from countries like the Netherlands where the bicycle is king and the streets are bike friendly.
