Having served as Deputy President for Youth Senate Kenya for a - TopicsExpress

Having served as Deputy President for Youth Senate Kenya for a few months and as PR Strathmore University Student Council (All under Presidents) I have learnt a great deal about the position of the Presidency. This isnt just any position of leadership. The position itself is inherently anointed, that it matters not who holds that position whether competent or incompetent, young or old, physically challenged, mentally challenged or not, from your tribe or not, highly educated or not, the position remains anointed and the holder with their flaws and imperfections inherits the anointment. A president holds the interests of a people in his hands and this is not to say that they should decide who benefits or not because they are meant to be impartial, however common sense has it that you do not bite the hand that feeds you. Many from Migori county have lamented at how ashamed they are but I will not do so, not because I am not ashamed or that I support the uncouth behaviour of the youth yesterday but because I understand the problem of Migori youth. Well you may want to know how I know their problem aand here is the answer, I grew up in Migori County for a good part of my childhood life, studied in Migori County and even voted in Migori County in the last general elections. The countys greatest challenges are unemployment, HIV/Aids, very high levels of illiteracy, teenage pregnancies, single- parent families, HIGH poverty levels, a recently increasing crime rate and the list is endless!! Migori county has been deprived of true leadership, we ( since I am now one of them by registration) have for a long time been made to believe that a leader is one who comes from our tribe, subtribe and even clan, that is meant for a few, that there are families on whom leadership was bestowed by the ancestors and no one else but them will lead. You will often hear the people say during campaigns that it is now the turn of so and sos family to lead. As a result we have rejected those who had our true interests at heart and were ready to serve regardless of where they come from. Young energetic leaders to whom change is at the core of their hearts and development a song they are ready to sing with the people. I happened to sit down with 5 youth from the county in June and this among many other problems were discussed. It was agreed that there is need to educate the youth of Migori County and the neighbouring Homabay County on what is leadership, who is a true leader? What is the impact of leaders elected on the development of the county? What are the values to look out for in leaders? This is a conversation will make happen with the support of friends not just from the county but friends who are passionate about change. #LetsTalkLeadership #LetsTalkChange #LetsTalkKenya.
