I stood there with my heart thumping so loud and fast that I felt - TopicsExpress

I stood there with my heart thumping so loud and fast that I felt it will fall out tearing my skin when the teacher called out my name. I was late for school for the first ever time and I was being punished. I had to get one big slash from a hard think stick. I was an early bird always and never missed schools prayer. In fact, it was usual that I lead the assembly most of the times. Today was an exception. I was feeling so awkward to have been standing in a queue meant for punishment. I dont know why but I had this fear that its a humiliation to get hit in front of a crowd. The line kept moving and my turn came. I was rubbing my hand with my trouser on the right thigh since my inner palms were sweating out of nervousness. I opened my palms and before I could make it hard, it hit me. The stick. A slash. Whip. It was winter and my blood went cold. I cursed myself under my breath for turning up late today. When I entered the classroom, my friends were laughing, for I was boasting around never being late to school. Teacher was surprised to see me coming late. Another humiliation. Another curse. I could barely write with my hand because of the excruciating pain with just one whip. I had to decide that day never to be late to school. I never got whipped again in my entire schooling. Those were silly days when small and silly things scared us but is no different from today. We get whipped almost each day but life seems to have its own way of teaching us lessons, even when we are not interested to learn.
