Having traveled to Honduras, Cozumel, Costa Maya, and Belize, countries which would largely be regarded as third world, and seeing how people endure while still having reason to smile every bit as capably as most others would, Ive come reinforce my appreciation for my state of being. Life is difficult no matter what, and at times, we fall back on the antiquated adage of it can always be worse/better for solace, finding comfort in the idea that our lives arent as bad as the people who have it worse elsewhere. I dont want to be grateful for that perspective. Instead, I wish to be grateful knowing that no matter how difficult my situation might become in the future or how valid I might be I asserting that life is unjust or even hellish, I have the unalienable power to smile wherever I am and find my very own reason to be happy. No matter how cursed you might believe this world to be, its not as cursed as one in which your happiness and peace of mind are entirely out of your control. Its never out of your hands lying comfortably in someone elses to be administered back to you in measured amounts at his/her discretion. No one gives me my happiness but me, and for that, I am supremely and eternally grateful. Happy Thanksgiving/Turkey Day, yall.
