NAMI Mass was one of 22 organizations in Massachusetts chosen to receive a behavioral health grant. Stigma is really just another word for discrimination. People with mental illness and their families feel the isolation every day. This grant from Martha Coakleys office will allow NAMI to launch a statewide anti-stigma campaign - its long overdue. Thank you for your advocacy calls and emails to the Massachusetts State Senators! Last week, the Senate this week powered through its annual budget debate, almost unanimously passing a $36.4 billion spending plan for the fiscal year that begins on July 1st. The stats broke down something like this: 948 amendments considered, 291 adopted, $130 million in spending added, $60 million in new revenues captured. Specific to the Department of Mental Health, the final senate budget did not change significantly from the original release which included approximately $730.8 million in funding for FY2015. This is approximately $22 million above projected FY14 spending. Included in this total is a $10 million trust fund to create new community placements for individuals stuck in DMH hospitals. The Ways and Means budget also mandates the ongoing operation of 45 beds at Taunton State Hospital and requires that DMH open two units currently not in use at the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital.
