Hawthorne Elementary School has been recognized with the Chicago - TopicsExpress

Hawthorne Elementary School has been recognized with the Chicago Wilderness Conservation & Native Landscaping Award for its leadership in restoring biodiversity to its Outdoor Classroom. Hawthornes Outdoor Classroom is used to provide structured teaching and learning activities, as well as unstructured play and relaxation opportunities surrounded by nature and the benefits of being outside. It includes wildlife habitat for birds and butterflies, a rain garden, vertical vegetable garden, compost bin, weather station, classroom-sized sitting area and smaller benches throughout. While multiple people were involved in the creation and maintenance of the Outdoor Classroom, we must give a shout out to Elmhurst Cool Cities Coalition Chair and Hawthorne parent Lisa Gerhold-Dirks who was and is instrumental in the success of the Outdoor Classroom. Congratulations!
