He ruled with an iron fist. During his reign we were subjected to unimaginable terror. As a young JAMBITO i added the word whisk into my vocabulary. It was then common to hear so and so has been whisked to an unknown destination and the fear of being whisked was so palpable that people speak about Abatcha in hushed tones! He was also corrupt, stole quite a lot. He involved his family so much in the affairs of state that even the first daughter had a semi-official office! But, is he the worst among our gang of villainous rulers? History is usually written by the victors. In death Abatcha was vanquished. The history of the man is being written by his adversaries. While Atiku and OBJ blended the ink, incarcerated progressive intellectuals wielded the pen. Please let us remember that this narrative tells only one side of the story. We need to hear from the other side. Only then can we appreciate where his place is in our history and weather he is deserving of a national award or not.
