He was young, to young to be on the street alone. Hiding under the - TopicsExpress

He was young, to young to be on the street alone. Hiding under the scrub bush in the little dusty town of Socorro New Mexico he had already learned to stay in the shadows out of site of the many dangers this interstate town had to offer. The Towns name derived from the word “soccour” means help or relief something he could use a little of right now. His mind was focused on his mother, where was she and why was she taken from him. He remembered her soft touch, the gentleness and care she provided was all he knew. Now suddenly he was on his own scared hungry and alone. He didn’t know where to go so he just hid there, at least this was better than being threatened by the bigger stronger enemies he had come across earlier in the day. Then it happened. She saw him when her patrol car turned into the alley, most people wouldn’t have noticed him but it was the sergeant’s job to notice things. She parked, got out and snuck along the bushes watching him, waiting until he turned his head and then made her move. He struggled as she pulled him against her breast. He felt her warmth and relaxed instinctively trusting her. She calmed him with her voice and took him back to the car. Inside he wasn’t sure what would happen to him but this was better than the lonesomeness of the street. She decided to take him home having compassion for his situation trying to talk to him but he remained silent maybe fearing that anything he said could be used against him. After having dinner the heat of the apartment along with the stress of the day knocked him out as soon as his head hit the pillow when she took him into her bed. The next day she didn’t know what to do with him fearing putting him into “the system”. So she called her friend Thomas explaining the situation, he said that his mom would take him in at her ranch and that she wouldn’t care that he was black she was kind and told him if he came across someone like him to call so he did. He cried all day and Thomas called his mom explaining the situation she said to bring him out to the ranch where she lived. Thomas spent the day leaving the orphan in his house hoping that he woudnt run away or get into trouble, but when he came home his guest was asleep on the couch. Thomas explained what was going to happen and it made the little waif nervous he was city boy and knew nothing about the country it was a scary thought as they got in the truck. Thomas left the door open and he made his break for it he ran across the yard and nearly got to the street but Thomas was to fast, catching him. He kicked fought and even bit Thomas trying to get away but the man was to strong and had made a commitment to take care of him and his mom was waiting. Thomas put him in the truck and the little guy shook with fear crying all the way to the ranch. By the time he got there it was dark and colder than the he had ever felt in his short life. Thomas’ mom took him to his room and offered him dinner but he couldn’t eat and he cried himself to sleep. He cried for the next couple of days not believing he had been just taken out to the middle of nowhere, this was wrong how could they do this, it must be against the law how would he get away and if he did where would he go it was scary outside and he didn’t know where he was anyway. The next few days went by and he ate but cried constantly. He noticed that Thomas’ mom and her husband were nice to him but he just couldn’t trust them or anyone else at this point after all that happened to him. Soon though he began to relax stopped crying and accepted his fate. The folks here were very good to him and tried to talk to him, but remained silent just coming out of his room to eat mostly at night when they were asleep. Then he would come and sit with them still not answering them or even allowing them to get close to him. He started to accept his fate and even liked his room, he would look out the windows all day. They even bought him a toy no one had ever done that. He soon came to see this as home and these were to be his people. I am Thomas’ moms husband writing this orphans story. I’m here for him and treat him like my one of my own. I know he will understand some day that all this was done with kindness and his best interest at heart. After all he’s in need and I think a pretty good young’an. I call him Spooky and he actually caught a mouse the other day I think he will come to trust us and become a pretty good cat.
