He who gives an answer before he hears, It is folly and shame to him.--Proverbs 18: 13 (NASB). It is easy to get worked up and let tempers flare. All this amounts to in a disagreement is escalating the argument without productive resolution. It creates opportunity for more misunderstanding and more words that someone can remember you said to hold on to resentfully. During a disagreement, agreeing to take time to gather thoughts and even write down thoughts can be helpful to organize a thoughtful conversation. Remember James 1: 19: My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. In essence, if you are quick to listen, you are more likely to prevent misunderstandings and prevent things from being said that cannot be taken back.--Laura Ketchie, LPC
