Head of Jelly Belly company wants to repeal Californias new law protecting transgender students The chairman of The Jelly Belly Candy Company is among those trying to block a new California law from going into effect designed to protect transgender students. Under the law, students will also have access to school facilities such as locker rooms and bathrooms that match their gender identity. Herman Rowland Sr., chair of the California-based Jelly Belly Candy Company, has donated $5,000 to the Privacy for All Students initiative campaign. It seeks to gather enough signatures to qualify for a ballot measure to repeal what is known as the School Success and Opportunity Act. The law is due to go into effect 1 January 2014 but success at qualifying for a ballot measure would put it on hold. They need to collect 500,000 signatures, according to Frontiers Magazine. The initiative campaign is being headed by Frank Schubert who served as a strategist to pass Californias Proposition 8 in 2008 which banned gay marriage in the state. A US Supreme Court ruling in June led to the marriages resuming. Schubert is also political director for the extremely anti-gay National Organization for Marriage. The company is based in Fairfield, California, and produces more than 37 million pounds of candy in 50 flavors including Buttered Popcorn, Margarita, Cappuccino and Strawberry Cheesecake. Jelly Belly jelly beans were a favorite of US President Ronald Reagan.
