The murder of two New York City police officers in Brooklyn was a horrible and tragic event. The entire Hispanic Federation community extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of P.O. Rafael Ramos and P.O. Wenjian Liu. We join President Obama in calling “for people to reject violence and words that harm.” The violent and senseless deaths of these two public servants are a stark reminder of the difficult and dangerous work done by police officers everywhere and add immeasurably to the suffering our city has experienced in recent weeks. As Mayor de Blasio rightly noted, “when police officers are murdered, it tears at the foundation of our society.” As we embrace this season of peace and look towards the opportunities and challenges a New Year will bring, we must redouble our efforts to unite all people and communities in support of justice, nonviolence and compassionate understanding.
