Heads up! If your stateside drivers license is expired, you run the risk of being arrested and your vehicle seized by the Polizei. Until recently, they have given a 90 day grace period for the individual to return to the states and get an updated DL. Not anymore. Under the SOFA, USAREUR drivers licenses are only valid if accompanied by a current U.S. State Drivers License. The German MoI set policy in 2013 that Germany will not honor the currency of any expired U.S. Drivers Licenses. Several U.S. States law authorize active duty military members out of state to not renew their license. These exceptions do not apply as far as the Polizei is concerned. The DL MUST have an expiration date in the future. Stickers or other methods used by states for DL extensions are not accepted.
