Heads up regarding an IRS phone scam. From Ralph Stocco, Toms River Police Department spokesman: The IRS scam is starting up again. This week we have had numerous reports that residents are getting phone calls from bogus Internal Revenue Service investigators. They are calling and stating that there are back taxes due and if you do not make a payment over the phone your credit will be negatively impacted and you will possibly be subjected to arrest. They know some basic personal information about you that they locate on the internet which lends a small bit of legitimacy to the phone call. We are aware of this scam and only need to be contacted in cases where someone is a victim and has made one of these over the phone payments. We remind residents to never give out personal information over the phone, never make a payment via phone unless you verify that the bill is legitimate, and when in doubt, double check by calling back phone numbers that are officially listed on known websites not the numbers that they supply you during the phone call.
