Health Benefits of Grindelia Grindelia is a perennial herb that originated in North America. The health benefits of Grindelia have been known for centuries by native Americans and was used as part of the United States Pharmacopoeia for its medicinal characteristics in the 19th century. It has widely been used as a folk cure to treat aliments such as, respiratory conditions, urinary tract infections, and fever. It is also used topically for skin rashes and burns. Another health benefit of Grindelia is that it can be utilized as an expectorant to assist those who suffer from bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. It soothes the bronchial airway and allows air to pass through the lungs more freely. It also helps eliminate obstructions of phlegm and catarrh in the passageway, improving breathing. Its valuable in making the nerve endings in the bronchial tubes less sensitive which can slow down a rapid heartbeat. Moreover, it can treat other respiratory disorders such as hay fever and whooping cough. One can also avail from the health benefits of Grindelia by making a poultice from this herb and applying it to skin afflictions like dermatitis, insect bites and minor burns. It is mainly used in hindering the escalation of poison oak with its calming effects on the skin. Although there are rarely reported any side effects in using Grindelia, large doses can greatly increase your risk of a negative reaction. The most reported side effect is mild stomach pain, I make Grindelia in a glycerite tincture so I have not had anyone report this side affect. The use of this or any herb should be stopped at once if symptoms of itching, rash, hives, or swelling are noticed as this could indicate an allergic reaction. For the most part, anyone can gain from the health benefits of Grindelia when used correctly and in moderation.
