Health Professionals Institute is proud to announce that we are the first school in Washington State to be approved to teach classes for the new Medication Assistant- certification (MA-C). This certification allows specially trained CNAs to pass some routine medications under the supervision of an RN. This certification will free up the floor nurse allowing the nurses more time to assess clients, perform treatments, and document care. Having an MC-A doing routine chores will also cut costs, easing budget stresses. The MA-C can pass routine oral medications, topical medications, as well as eye, ear, and nose medications. MA-Cs cannot give medications via G-tube or by injection. A nurse must assess the client before any PRN medications are given. Then the nurse can delegate the medication administration to the MA-C. They cannot give class I, II, or III narcotics nor can they count narcotics at shift change. Having an MA-C pass routine medication will allow nurses to get back to caring for clients instead of passing the same pills day in and day out. MA-Cs will have 60 hours of classroom and lab training and 40 hours of clinical training, supervised by an RN. They must then pass a state exam for licensure before they are allowed to administer medications in the skilled nursing setting. We are excited to be able to offer this program to CNAs and skilled nursing facilities. More than thirty states already have MA-C programs in place and we are thrilled to be able to offer this program here in Washington.
