Healthy Eating For Older People As humans get older their diet becomes a serious cause for concern because their ability to digest certain foods decreases. They also have a lower calorie requirement. Healthy eating for older people: Starch and fiber Brown bread, brown rice, whole grain pasta, whole grain cereals and potatoes are good examples. These foods are low in fat and are also a good source of essentials such as vitamins, protein and minerals. The fiber helps prevent constipation – the single biggest problem amongst old people. Healthy eating for older people: Avoid raw bran In a bid to increase their fiber intake, we have seen folks sprinkle raw bran on food. Doing so is likely to prevent you absorbing some important minerals from the food you are attempting to eat. If fiber is your concern then include foods such as oats, peas, beans, lentils, vegetable and fruit. Healthy eating for older people: Iron up As you get older, you need to be sure the iron count in your blood does not go down. For this, you should include well cooked (preferably grilled or roasted), red meats. Iron is also present in significant quantities in pulses, fish, eggs, brown bread, green vegetables and fortified healthy eating breakfast cereals. If you love your meat, buy good fresh liver. Apart from iron, liver also contains vitamin A. But do not eat too much liver as too much vitamin A can cause other medical problems in old people. Also, avoid coffee with meals as caffeine interferes with the absorption of iron. Healthy eating for older people: Top up on vitamin C Vitamin C helps the body to absorb iron. Good sources of vitamin C are fruits and vegetables. In any case, it would be a good healthy menu planner to include a salad with your meal. Apart from the usual ingredients, just make sure you have lime juice, herbs, peppers, tomatoes and boiled potatoes in it. Healthy eating for older people: Folic acid for cell repair Folic acid (also known as vitamin B9 or folacin) and folate, is vital for cell repair. Adequate calcium intake will help combat Osteoporosis. Older people avoid consuming ‘too much’ water because they need to visit the toilet more frequently. Also, as we get older our sense of thirst reduces but that does not mean we need any less water. Not drinking sufficient quantities of water (at least 5 glasses of water a day) will quickly lead to dehydration which on the surface is manifested as headaches, confusion and irritability. Lack of adequate water can also lead to kidney failure. Water also aids digestion and helps avoid constipation.
