Heard of GIGO? Garbage In … Garbage Out! This is an expression derived from the computer industry and used to stress the point that only a clearly written computer code will produce functioning output. The same is true when for you design a questionnaire or survey tool. If you expend a great deal of effort on your research you certainly expect to get data output that can be interpreted and add meaning to your work. Easier said than done! Start with clearly written input – Start with questions or statements that have been tested and proven not to be ambiguous! If you choose to write your own questions you cannot be the sole person to make the judgment call that they are clear, concise and to the point. Testing is critical to ensure that you get quality output…data that can be clearly interpreted AND trusted.
